Distribution center staff Albert Heijn is going to strike, empty shelves are threatening

People who work in Albert Heijn distribution centers will go on strike from Sunday evening. This is what trade unions CNV and FNV say. Work at the distribution center in Tilburg will be halted from seven o’clock on Monday morning. The strike will last until Wednesday. They do this to reinforce their demand for more wage increases. The strike could prevent AH supermarkets from being supplied and empty shelves, the unions say.

Distribution center staff want more pay. It employs a total of about 6,000 people, half of whom are temporary workers. “Albert Heijn believes that it has made a decent wage offer with a 6.6 percent wage increase for one year,” says Soraya Faez of CNV. “But that is far too little. Last year’s inflation was 10.6 percent. Employees only received 2.75 percent in 2022.”

Wildcat
“You would say that all alarm bells have gone off at Albert Heijn after the wildcat strikes recently in Pijnacker and Tilburg,” says Shefania Sewbaks. She is a director at FNV Handel.

“With this, the distribution employees already clearly showed how dissatisfied they are and that they are willing to take more action. By not meeting them at all, Albert Heijn is now calling for new strikes.”

The unions hope for understanding for the possible empty shelves due to the strike.
