FC Bayern prevailed against Champions League defending champions Paris St. Germain. The Munich team showed an outstanding performance in the first half, the sending off of Luis Diaz then changed the game massively – but the guests managed to win over time.

Diaz (4th and 32nd minute of the game) scored the two goals in Bayern’s 2-1 (2-0) away win at the Parc des Princes, before the Colombian was shown a red card before the half-time whistle for a serious foul. Joao Neves brought the increasingly stronger Parisians closer again (74′), but the French couldn’t do more.

In the second half it was of course a completely different game“said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer after the game on Prime Video.”I think in the first half you could see who was the better team. It’s not that easy with ten men. It was a fight in the second half.”

With the renewed victory, the Munich team overtook the previous league leaders Paris and moved to the top of the premier class. The away win means the 16th win in the 16th competitive game – Bayern’s perfect record remains.

Diaz quickly puts Bayern in the lead

After his B-Elf’s easy 3-0 win against Leverkusen, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany had once again called up his best team, including the offensive forces Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Diaz, who had been in top form for weeks, in the starting line-up. And the self-confidence that Bayern brought with them due to their outstanding start to the season was also immediately visible in Paris.

“One of the most intense halves of my career”

Things became extremely dangerous after just three minutes when Serge Gnabry brought in Olise, who ran alone towards Lucas Chevalier. Olise was denied by the PSG keeper, Diaz was there to take the follow-up shot and took the early lead.

Bayern stuck with it and dominated a noticeably impressed Paris. The Kompany team played one-on-one all over the pitch and gave the hosts no time on the ball. The result was mistakes in the build-up of the game by the Parisians, and Bayern regularly used the ball winnings to create chances. Joshua Kimmich fittingly described the first round after the game: “One of the most intense halves of my career.”

Dembélé goal disallowed – then he has to go out

There was no sign of Paris for a long time until Ousmane Dembélé maneuvered a cross into the goal from an offside position (22′). The VAR intervened and annulled the goal, but that was only the first bad news for Paris: it was Dembélé’s last action, the current Ballon d’Or winner had to be replaced with an injury. Bradley Barcola had a good chance shortly afterwards when he was denied by Neuer as he widened from a tight angle (30′).

Jonathan Tah (l.) saw a “brilliant first half” for his Bayern team

However, the Munich team survived this difficult phase in the middle of the first half unscathed – and took control again. Present in the duels, quick to act, and with a lot of individual class on the ball: the Munich team went one better on an already good start to the season.

Diaz flies, Hakimi has to leave in tears

Gnabry’s shot from distance initially hit the left post to the right (31′), then it was Diaz again who made Bayern celebrate. Marquinhos was far too sleepy in front of his own goal, the Colombian, wide awake, stole the ball and shot it dry.

Josip Stanisic (40′) and Kimmich (45’+1) could have even increased the score to 3-0 before this extremely eventful first half turned into a negative climax for both teams: Ashraf Hakimi prevailed in a duel with Diaz, Bayern’s winger didn’t want to let that slide and brought Hakimi down with a tackle from behind. The contact caused Hakimi to twist badly and had to be replaced in tears. According to the video images, referee Maurizio Mariani changed his decision from yellow to red against Diaz.

Paris in the majority in forward gear

After the break the game was completely different. Being outnumbered and with the 2-0 lead behind them, the Munich team dropped significantly deeper, Paris, in turn, now had to play forward and established themselves around the Bayern penalty area. And despite the undoubtedly great qualities of the Paris offensive, Bayern managed not to allow any significant chances for a long time.

In the middle of the second half, midfield strategist Vitinha increasingly took control of the game, distributed balls and initiated dangerous attacks. His pass to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the Georgian in a shooting position in the penalty area, but Neuer safely grabbed Kvaratskhelia’s shot (65th). PSG got better, became more compelling – and finally scored: Joker Neves escaped from a cross from the Bayern defense and scored the goal as he fell.

Joao Neves scores the connecting goal for Paris

Bayern, who were so dominant and seemingly invulnerable in the first half, began to flounder. There was hardly anything going forward, Olise’s low shot after a counterattack was the guests’ only good counterattack situation (69th). In the final phase, Paris was overwhelmingly superior, bringing one ball after the other into the penalty area, but the attentive Neuer and a bit of luck in one or two scenes helped Bayern save the narrow victory over the finish line.
