At VfL Gummersbach, Julian Köster became captain and international. Now he joins a top club.

Julian Köster is opening a new chapter in his career: The international will switch from VfL Gummersbach to the record champion THW Kiel in the summer of 2026. The 25 -year -old back room player signed a four -year contract with the zebras, which runs until June 30, 2030.

Köster developed into a leading player in Gummersbach and took over the captain’s office in 2022. With the German national team, he celebrated the winning of the silver medal at the Olympic Games in 2024.

Köster said about his future club: “The THW is not only a record champion, but also one of the largest and most traditional clubs in the handball world. It is a great honor for me to be able to play for this club in the future.” He is also looking forward to the new challenge in Kiel and to continue growing as part of the team.

THW trainer Filip Jícha was also positive about the newcomer. Köster is “defensive and offensive one of the strongest, if not the strongest German back room player”. With his overview and his cool head, Köster is already a game -determining size in the club and in the national team – and its development is far from over.

VfL managing director Christoph Schindler also praised Köster. The Bielefeld -born, who came to Gummersbach in 2021 in the period of the second division stay, “symbolizes the upswing that the club has taken in recent years”. One would have loved to keep him, but respect his decision and wish him all the best.
