Test against Italy
With three newcomers, the German U21 national team is playing their last international match of the year against Italy. Head coach Antonio Di Salvo nominated 23 players on Friday for the game on November 19 (5:30 p.m.), of which Cologne’s Denis Huseinbasic (21), Augsburg’s Maurice Malone (22), who was loaned to Wolfsberg, and Freiburg’s Noah Weißhaupt (21) are there for the first time.

Mainz’ Jonathan Burkardt (22) and Weißhaupt team-mate Kevin Schade (20) are back in the squad after missing the previous September tests against France and England. With a market value of 15 million euros, Burkardt is the most valuable professional in the squad. Compared to the previous international match period, Stuttgart’s Josha Vagnoman (21), Frankfurt’s Faride Alidou (21) and Ansgar Knauff (20; yellow-red suspension), England legionnaire Reda Khadra (21), Union’s Jamie Leweling (21) and WM are missing -Driver Youssoufa Moukoko (17).
“We want to continue to measure ourselves against the best, which is why the next top-class team is waiting for us in Italy,” said Di Salvo. The 43-year-old continued: “It is precisely through these games that we can prepare perfectly for the European Championship next year. We hope that we can build on what we did well against France and England and take a step further in our development.”
Meanwhile, Joti Chatzialexiou, sporting director for national teams at the DFB, was critical of some clubs: “Thanks to the good cooperation with the clubs, we can still do this classic in the current phase with the Winter World Cup, numerous trips abroad and outside of a period of demobilization with a powerful squad approach. It’s great that some clubs are even releasing several players. Unfortunately, there are also clubs that assess the value of international matches differently than their own friendlies.”
