The round of 16 of the DFB Cup will be drawn on Sunday (7.15 p.m.) in the sports show.

Schlotterbeck’s mistake allows St. Pauli to take the lead

St. Pauli got into the game well and were largely the better team in the first half. The guests had their first big chance in the 37th minute: Lukas Daschner played from the right to Etienne Amenyido, who failed from six yards out at goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

Shortly thereafter, however, St. Pauli took the lead: Keven Schlotterbeck carelessly frittered away the ball in midfield, Daschner walked freely towards the goal and, with a bit of luck, converted – goalkeeper Atubolu was still there (42′).

Freiburg forced the extension shortly before the end

Freiburg, currently in third place in the Bundesliga and already qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League, hardly had any compelling action in the second half. St. Pauli almost made sure of that: After a pass from the left into the middle of Freiburg’s Noah Weißhaupt, Eric Smith almost scored an own goal – but the ball rolled just wide of the goal (71′).

In the 90th minute, Freiburg complained about a handball from St. Pauli in the penalty area. Smith had shot the ball from close range in a liberating shot at Adam Dzwigała’s outstretched arm. Referee Felix Brych decided against a penalty. A video assistant is only used in the DFB Cup from the round of 16.

Freiburg forced the extra time in the third minute of injury time: Yannik Keitel crossed from the right to Matthias Ginter, who converted a header from the far post. In the fifth minute of added time, Ginter almost made it 2-1, but St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj saved the header.

Overtime: Gregoritsch scores late to win

For a long time, little happened in extra time, there were hardly any mandatory shots – Keitel failed with a failed cross at Vasilj. Ginter extended the following corner from Vincenzo Grifo – Michael Gregoritsch headed into the goal to make it 2-1 (119′).
