Frankfurter already operated
After Ansgar Knauff lost the European Championship, the replacement for the German U21 national team has already been decided. The DFB reacted on Saturday evening and nominated Finn Ole Becker from TSG Hoffenheim. Knauff broke his collarbone in the friendly against Switzerland on Friday. The 21-year-old winger from Eintracht Frankfurt had already left the training camp in South Tyrol and had already had an operation.
“OP survived well,” it said on Saturday evening on Knauff’s Instagram channel. In one photo, the right winger can be seen in the hospital bed with a thumbs up. “It’s just not easy to find the right words for it,” Knauff was quoted as saying. He was “of course extremely disappointed”, but wanted to come back stronger. “The news of Ansgar’s injury hit us all hard. His absence is an awful shame for him personally and a great loss for the whole team – now we have to work even closer together,” said head coach Antonio Di Salvo. It is unclear how long Knauff will be out. However, the SGE expects a longer absence.
Becker replaces Knauff: The final EM squad of the German U21
Becker is now to replace Knauff and is expected at the training camp in South Tyrol on Sunday. “We’re delighted that Finn Ole was able to step in at such short notice,” said Di Salvo. “He didn’t hesitate at all, was very happy about the appointment and canceled his vacation for us.” In accordance with UEFA regulations, the DFB was still able to make a subsequent nomination even after the official squad had been announced. Jordan Beyer (FC Burnley) and Jan Thielmann (1. FC Köln) had to leave due to injury.
The EM will take place in Georgia and Romania from June 21st to July 8th. Germany is the defending champion. On Sunday, the DFB team will first travel to Georgia, where they will start the tournament against Israel in Kutaisi on Thursday (6:00 p.m./Sat.1).
