Defense chief Mats Hummels on his “most difficult phases”

After months of persistent problems with the patellar tendon in his left knee, Mats Hummels returned to his physical fitness at the turn of the year. In an interview before the Bundesliga game against SC Freiburg, the BVB leading player explained how important perfect fitness is for him.

“The most difficult phases in my career were always when I wasn’t 100 percent fit. I can already see that that’s the most important factor. Only then can you fully concentrate on what you’re doing on the pitch does not and does not have to constantly listen to his body,” says the 33-year-old veteran in “holiday magazine” on the BVB YouTube channel.

In the course of the completed first half of the season, that was practically never the case. Hummels dragged himself through the European Championships with the German national team with his knee injury and also missed a few BVB games at the start of the season.

The central defender was quickly back under the new head coach Marco Rose, even without being completely fit and trained: “Finding the balance, getting really fit and also playing and fulfilling your tasks really wasn’t easy.” , reported Hummels from these weeks, which lasted well into November.

Hummels tied to BVB until 2023

“The international breaks were worth their weight in gold for me, because I could train very well for myself. From mid-November I was relatively pain-free and fit. With the two weeks of vacation at the turn of the year, the last aspect of freshness was added, also for the head”, added the BVB star.

In the meantime, the Dortmund defense chief sees himself in a physical condition “where you should be if you have to and want to play at this level”.

At the start of the second half of the season last weekend in Frankfurt (3-2), the 2014 world champion was back on the defensive at Borussia Dortmund. In the current season, Hummels has played a total of 21 times for BVB, with whom he still has a current contract until 2023.
