Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode impress and meet in World Matchplay quarter-finals | Sport

with videoFollowing Michael van Gerwen, Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode have also qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay. The Frisian number eleven of the Order of Merit defeated Daryl Gurney (11-4), while the Westland number fourteen of the ranking dealt with Michael Smith (11-7).

Noppert, who was 10-6 too strong for Brendan Dolan in the previous round, made the difference early in the match. After both darters successfully defended their own leg, Noppert took five legs in a row. In doing so, he took full advantage of Gurney’s many misses at crucial moments.

Noppert finally got the audience on the benches with impressive finishes, but especially after he threw 180 in the tenth leg and looked at the fans at his last dart. To be no look-throw was the culmination of his convincing victory. The 31-year-old Frisian threw an average of 102.36 and made a 180 five times. Noppert threw over a hundred several times, leading to despondent looks from opponent Gurney.

Michael van Gerwen already secured a place in the last eight in England last night. De Vlijmenaar convincingly defeated Joe Cullen with 11-5.

José de Sousa also secured a place in the quarterfinals. The Portuguese eventually settled with Rob Cross, who fought back in the match. However, with a 10-8 lead in legs, De Sousa got five match darts to finish it off. With his very last arrow, he ended Cross’s resurrection.

Gerwyn Price then lived up to his favorite role against Dave Chisnall. The number two of the Order of Merit turned a 4-6 deficit into an 11-8 victory.

In the last game of the evening, Van Duijvenbode faced Smith. The Westlander shot out of the starting blocks and took a 4-0 lead against the number three in the world. Aubergenius Didn’t actually get into trouble for a moment after that and caused a big stunt. He will face Noppert in the quarterfinals.

The results:

Danny Noppert 11-4 Daryl Gurney
Jose de Sousa 11-8 Rob Cross
Gerwyn Price 11-8 Dave Chisnall
Dirk van Duijvenbode 11-7 Michael Smith

Michael van Gerwen already managed to qualify for the quarterfinals. The Dutchman, who is placed fourth at the tournament in Blackpool, won 11-5 against Joe Cullen in the second round. Van Gerwen is the only Dutch darts player to win the World Matchplay. He did that in 2015 and in 2016. He will face Nathan Aspinall from England in the quarterfinals.
