Peacekeepers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have begun the withdrawal of forces and the transfer of protected facilities to law enforcement agencies in Kazakhstan. This was reported in the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense, reports “RIA News”

“In accordance with the plan developed by the command of the collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the transfer of socially significant objects guarded by peacekeepers to law enforcement agencies of the country has begun,” the message says.

The ministry added that the peacekeepers are preparing equipment for loading into Russian planes in order to return to their permanent deployment points.

CSTO forces were brought into Kazakhstan amid protests that began in the republic on January 2. Citizens of Kazakhstan took part in rallies due to a two-fold increase in the price of liquefied gas. Soon, the rallies spread to several regions of the republic, clashes with the police, attacks on administrative buildings and mass looting began.
