Coach Steffen Baumgart is apparently returning to the north – to HSV. According to consistent media reports, he will succeed Tim Walter at the Hamburg second division soccer team.
This was reported by “Sportbild” and the TV station “Sky” on Monday afternoon. Accordingly, the 52-year-old should receive a contract in the Hanseatic city until 2025. The “Hamburger Abendblatt” and the “Hamburger Morgenpost”, among others, had previously reported that sports director Jonas Boldt was said to have contacted the coach on Sunday.
He confirmed the talks himself on Monday. “Yes, we are having talks,” said Baumgart on “Sky”. HSV did not initially announce the agreement, but also confirmed discussions to the Sport Information Service (SID).
HSV for Baumgart der “Childhood club”
The Rostock native left Cologne by mutual consent after two and a half years; the decision was made shortly before Christmas. Since then, the ex-professional has been repeatedly associated with the Hamburg team, as the 52-year-old is considered a fan of the traditional club and once called it his “childhood club”: “I’ve always been a bit of an HSV fan since I was a child. That I became when the club was still big.”
Baumgart’s contract with FC has already been terminated; it would not cost any transfer fee. In addition to the ex-professional, the names of Lukas Kwasniok (SC Paderborn) as well as Jon Dahl Tomasson (unemployed) and Johannes Hoff Thorup (FC Nordsjaelland) were also traded in Hamburg.
Polzin’s debut against Rostock was unsuccessful
Walter was fired in Hamburg a week ago, and in the 2-2 draw at Hansa Rostock at the weekend, his former assistant Merlin Polzin was on the bench as interim coach. Boldt did not want to publicly commit to the coaching question during the Rostock game.
There is “definitely” the “idea” that Polzin would also look after HSV against SV Elversberg (Sunday, 1.30 p.m./in the live center at NDR.de), said the manager on “Sky”: “But the football is very dynamic and many things play a role”. As third in the table, HSV is already four points behind a direct promotion place.
In the first two home games of the year against Karlsruher SC (3:4) and Hannover 96 (3:4), the North Germans conceded eight goals.
