Concern during the press conference after the Consultation Committee: “CO2 meter in the room indicated alarming values” | Inland

During the press conference after the Consultation Committee this afternoon, a CO2 meter in the press room indicated alarming values. This is reported by a reporter from the Gazet Van Antwerpen. “There was clearly panic among Prime Minister De Croo’s employees,” it sounds.

The press conference after the Consultation Committee was held as usual on Thursday afternoon in the ‘De Bunker’ room in Brussels. As the name of the room suggests, it is located at basement level and there are no opening windows.

Before the press conference, the CO2 meter hanging in the room indicated normal values of 700 ppm (parts per million, the unit of measurement of CO2 concentrations, ed.), according to the GVA reporter. However, as more and more journalists, photographers and ministers’ employees entered the room, the number of CO2 particles in the air also increased. The threshold value of 900 ppm, as it applies in the catering industry, for example, was quickly exceeded.

“The employees started asking photographers to leave the room so that the value would drop. But the number on the CO2 meter continued to rise,” the Antwerp reporter testifies. At the end of the one and a half hour press conference, the CO2 meter would have shown an alarming value of more than 1,200 ppm.

Ventilate

If, for example, a cafe or restaurant exceeds the standard of 900 ppm, some “essential actions” must be taken, according to government guidelines. This mainly concerns ventilation, for example by opening windows and doors or using an air purifier. But as said, opening the windows in the press room this afternoon was not an option.
