Channel tunnel staff strike over: Eurostar deploys extra trains | Abroad

There were no trains running through the tunnel that connects mainland Europe and the United Kingdom on Thursday afternoon. This was due to an unannounced strike on the French side of the tunnel by employees of Getlink, the tunnel operator. Hst operator Eurostar subsequently canceled more than twenty trains.

Passengers whose services were canceled yesterday can rebook their journey on the extra train services that have been added.

The strike led to “the complete interruption of service and the closure of our terminals in France and the United Kingdom,” Getlink said. “The unions have rejected the exceptional end-of-year bonus of 1,000 euros and called for a strike to demand three times that amount,” it said on Thursday.

Security officers had to evacuate passengers who had already passed through border control and were on the platform, travelers said.
