Cardinal De Kesel: “Only solidarity guarantees real freedom” | Inland

“Too great inequality between people undermines social peace. It is not good if people feel that they are not being listened to, that they do not count, do not belong,” said Cardinal De Kesel. He talks about migration and the drowning at sea. He also wonders where the boundary lies between legality and humanity.

According to him, the floods in Wallonia show once again “how seriously global warming has to be taken. And how it not only has to do with how we treat the earth, but also with each other. And especially with people who are poor or in need”. Cardinal De Kesel talks about the enormous havoc caused by the flood, but also about the heartwarming solidarity that followed the disaster.

“Even this year we can’t celebrate Christmas as we normally do. The pandemic that we are struggling to bring under control will not allow this,” said the cardinal. He asks not to forget, through all the glitter, the original meaning of Christmas: “that God became man that we also might be men in all truth, with and for each other”.
