Ian Maatsen (22) spoke in an interview about his move to BVB and highlighted the role of coach Edin Terzic and the board in his decision. “They gave me confidence and I trust them. That’s why it worked so well,” the loan player told the Guardian. He actually planned to stay at Chelsea FC.

He also felt the trust from the Londoners, but left-back Maatsen was faced with the problem at Chelsea that many young professionals before him had already faced: “Given the pressure they (the club) are under, it’s sometimes difficult for a coach “It’s difficult to let everyone play – especially young talents with potential,” said Maatsen, assessing his situation at the Blues. “As a young player you have to deal with it. Sometimes it’s not fair, but maybe it’s the best decision for the club and other teammates. I’m aware of that, but I want to play football.”

But Maatsen saw the chances of this dwindling. For the past and current seasons, Stamford spent a total of more than a billion euros on replacing new players. “My plan was to stay at Chelsea,” he said, explaining: “I had done my loan spells, I thought I was ready to compete against the big clubs. But sometimes things don’t work that way in football. I didn’t get many opportunities. It’s not the end of the world, but you have to be ready. You always have to believe in it because things can happen so quickly in football.”

Maatsen’s final departure from London now seems more likely than a return to Chelsea; a longer stay in Dortmund may also be conceivable for the Dutchman. For now, the BVB move was “the best solution” for him. “It is a big club where young players can develop. They had players like Bellingham, Hakimi, Dembélé. I’m happy to be here,” said Maatsen. He brought a breath of fresh air to the BVB game on the left wing, contributed three goals in nine Bundesliga games and was twice named in the matchday team by the TM community.
