NFL: Jimmy Garoppolo is looking for a new employer

The Las Vegas Raiders are rebuilding their team significantly this offseason. After the men from Sin City put a lot of money on the table on the first day of free agency, they are now apparently parting ways with an offensive duo around quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

As Ian Rapoport from the “NFL Network” reports, among others, the Raiders will sack Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow today.

By releasing the two offensive players, you would have to accept almost 22 million in dead money, but would also generate another 19.5 million in cap space.

And they can definitely use it, because they secured one of the most expensive free agents of the year in defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on Monday. Wilkins gets a four-year, $110 million contract in Sin City that includes $84.75 million guaranteed.

Meanwhile, they have already signed a replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo by giving Gardner Minshew a two-year contract worth $25 million (15 million guaranteed).

NFL: End of the Garoppolo misunderstanding

It is now apparently clear that the Garoppolo misunderstanding has ended prematurely after just one season. The quarterback came from the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 and was supposed to compensate for the departure of Derek Carr in Las Vegas. At no point did he succeed. Garoppolo never really found the connection in Las Vegas, which was also due to his injuries.

In the end, he only played in seven games for the Raiders, who had given him a three-year contract worth up to $72.25 million.

In his seven appearances, he totaled 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns (9 interceptions). Over the course of the season, Jimmy G’s reputation fell so far that he was demoted to the third quarterback behind rookie Aidan O’Connell and Brian Hoyer.
