After a disappointing practice match against Algeria last night, the players of the Dutch national team left for the World Cup in the US this afternoon. A special flight for a select group of KLM staff, who can pamper the players on board.

The orange selection consists of three men in the cockpit and eleven cabin crew. Senior purser Bert-Jan Zoetbrood manages the team. He tells NH that it is a great honor for him. “I don’t know exactly why I was asked, but the affinity with the sport probably played a role.”

Zoetbrood himself once played professional football and, in addition to his job at KLM, works for a professional club. A few hours before departure he discusses ‘the tactics’ with his colleagues. “Solid defense, stable midfield and we’ll finish it up front,” someone jokes.

Then it is of course time for the serious preparation. According to Zoetbrood, the flight will not be very different from normal. “You fly with far fewer people. We have about 68 passengers. Most of them are of course known, so the crew is composed. But flight safety and other matters are of course the same.”

Taking a photo with your favorite player or getting an autograph is probably not an option for the staff. “The KNVB and KLM have made strict agreements,” says Zoetbrood.

However, they will make some extra rounds during the long flight with healthy snacks, such as fruit. The players also receive a regular business class meal. Zoetbrood wants to create a good atmosphere with his team on board and hopes to contribute to a great sporting performance. “I think we will win the World Cup,” he says confidently.

The players are not flown to all matches by KLM. The Zoetbrood team flies back home on a ‘normal’ flight.
