Borussia Mönchengladbach: Nico Elvedi is currently not on equal footing

Should commit to the club

“It was never the case that I wanted to leave here at any cost. On the contrary, I’ve been here for eight years and really appreciate the club and all the people here,” Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi recently told the “Picture“-Newspaper. In the summer, the 26-year-old central defender was about to move to Wolverhampton Wanderers until the Premier League club said nothing more about him. In the meantime, the Swiss is said to have changed his mind and is now aiming for a contract extension beyond 2024 – but this has apparently not yet been communicated to the “foals”.

When asked about the situation of Elvedi, who has only been on the pitch for seven minutes this season, coach Gerardo Seoane explained at a press conference on Friday: “We are in discussions with Nico Elvedi. If there is a commitment from him to us, it opens all possibilities for him. At the moment he is a squad member like any other, but not on the same level as a player who has already clearly committed to Borussia.” With a market value of 18 million euros, the defender is the most valuable player in the Gladbach squad with a working paper that ends in 2024.

When it comes to free transfers from valuable professionals, the team from the Lower Rhine has been a branded child in recent years. In the summer, the “Foals” lost three main pillars with Marcus Thuram (Inter Milan), Ramy Bensebaini (BVB) and captain Lars Stindl (KSC) for nothing. A repetition of such a constellation should be prevented at all costs. According to the latest reports, Elvedi is looking to extend his contract by at least one season. But he would only be willing to do this if an exit clause of 10 million euros was anchored in the contract.

Gladbach coach Seoane on Omlin: Three to four months of downtime

Seoane also provided information about the health of goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, who will be out for a long time due to a shoulder injury. “Jonas had shoulder surgery on Monday and the operation went well. He will complete the first part of the rehab in Switzerland and then the second part here with us in Mönchengladbach,” said the coach about his captain. “It is difficult to make a prognosis with him regarding this shoulder issue. However, three to four months of downtime can certainly be expected. It will be rather difficult for him to intervene again this year.”

Moritz Nicolas was last between the posts and will probably also be used in Darmstadt on Sunday as Jan Olschowsky was injured during the week. “Jan has had a cold all week and is questionable for the weekend. If the values are right, he can complete an individual session this afternoon,” explained Seoane. In addition to the two, there is also a veteran in the squad.
