Boris Becker protects Novak Djokovic

The three-time Wimbledon winner Boris Becker has once again commented on the debate about Novak Djokovic. He protects him, but also says clearly that in the end he alone is responsible for the confusion.

Boris Becker again asked for understanding for his former protégé Novak Djokovic, but also suggested vaccination against the corona virus for the tennis world number one. In an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” published on Friday evening, the three-time Wimbledon winner was not surprised that the Australian authorities had again withdrawn the visa from the Serb. Becker called Immigration Secretary Alex Hawke’s decision four days after a court defeat “a strong return”.

“I don’t point fingers at people”

The start of defending champion Djokovic at the Australian Open from Monday is questionable, a federal court in Melbourne will deal with the 34-year-old’s appeal at the weekend. Becker, former coach of the winner of 20 Grand Slam tournaments, emphasized with a view to the authorities: “I’m not someone who points the finger at people, but they’re not entirely innocent in the Novak Djokovic disaster. But the bill has to be taken he’ll pay all by himself.”

Anyone who does not get vaccinated does not automatically become a bad person, says Becker, who himself has been vaccinated three times. “There are many people who take Novak’s view, trust in their strong immune system and maybe have a different view of the world. As a democratic society, we should also allow these other opinions,” says Becker.

The 54-year-old pointed out that an infection is still possible. “In the meantime we have learned that despite three vaccinations you can also become infected and pass on the disease. That’s the devilish thing: There is no best solution, only a temporary one. Novak made a different decision than I and the majority of people did. But he didn’t do anything forbidden,” he underscored.

However, Becker also advised: “If he wants to continue concentrating on tennis, he has to make changes. That’s why my opinion would be: “Novak, try to see that it will be easier for you if you’re vaccinated.” I don’t know if he’ll do that.” said Becker. It won’t be any easier for Djokovic because the French Open and Wimbledon would also take a close look at the situation in Australia. However, he does not believe that Djokovic is ending his career prematurely because of Corona and his attitude towards it.
