Border controls must stop freedom convoys

The intention is to protest against the corona rules. The idea came over from Canada.

Official ban

No Convoy of Freedom may pass through our country and through Brussels. Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort (PS) and Brussels Mayor Philippe Close (PS) have banned the protest because no application was submitted. There will also be border controls.

They announced this in a joint press release. “The Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden, the Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort and the Mayor of Brussels Philippe Close are deploying federal, regional and local resources to prevent the blockage of the Brussels-Capital Region,” it sounds.

Phenomenon from Canada

The phenomenon of the freedom convoys has come over from Canada. In recent days, social media has called for as many trucks and other vehicles as possible to come to the capital on Monday 14 February from all provinces of our country.

In addition, there are also calls from other European capitals to move to Brussels and flood the city. Anyone who tries to do so will be checked at the Belgian border by the federal police. The Brussels Region and the City of Brussels take a decision banning demonstrations on their territory for motorized vehicles.

In practice, trucks that do come to the capital are diverted by the Brussels police zones and the federal police to Parking C. The Brussels police has already called for people to avoid the capital by car from Sunday afternoon.

“The aim of this cooperation between the three levels of government is to influence public order in the capital as little as possible,” conclude Verlinden, Vervoort and Close.
