Books: the state of reading at the Seminary of the Booksellers School

Land figures ofItalian Association of Publishers speak for themselves: about 92 million books sold in 2021, almost 25 percent more than in 2020. And for once we beat Sweden and Finland, countries traditionally of strong readers: in the various with us there was an increase of 42 percentagainst 14 and 10 in the great North. We bought books online (43.5 percent, up) or in bookstores (51.5 percent, unfortunately down). We read a little more, therefore, and we like to range across genres, even if the comic has registered a spectacular increase (+ 188 percent). What will happen now? What can we expect in the world of books from the year that has just “taken office” and is still affected by the pandemic? We will discuss it next Seminar of the Booksellers Schoolthe conference to be held in streaming on Friday 28 January from 10 am to 1 pm and will have as its theme The new future. The Seminar is organized by the Umberto and Elisabetta Mauri Foundation with the contribution of Messaggerie Libri and Messaggerie Italiane, and in collaboration with the Italian Publishers Association, the Italian Booksellers Association and the Center for Book and Reading, and will involve publishers and booksellers Italian and international.

An appointment that has been defined as the Davos of publishing, the States-General that measure the temperature of a fundamental sector for the diffusion of culture such as that of bookstores.
