Biathlete Doll wins mass start in Antholz – biathlon – winter sports

With an outstanding shooting, strong nerves and a brilliant final round, Doll pulled the nerve of the serial winner of the past years and got the third World Cup victory of his career. Johannes Kühn (6 mistakes) was 19th after surviving the corona infection, Roman Rees (6 mistakes) followed in 21st place. Erik Lesser and Philipp Nawrath, who would also have qualified for the race, had not started in Antholz.

Bö attacks first

The race of the top 30 from the World Cup ranking and the individual on Thursday began without much preamble. Even before the first shooting, Johannes Thingnes Bö tore the field apart, but had to go back once after the prone position.

Only eleven biathletes survived the first shooting, including Quentin Fillon Maillet, the Norwegians Laegreid and Bakken as well as Kühn and Doll.

Doll and Bö determine the race

Doll stayed in the leading group afterwards. In a quintet he came to the second shooting. There the World Cup leader Fillon Maillet shot himself out of the race. On the other hand, Doll hit all the targets and so did Bö, who had already made up for his mistake from the first shooting.

Both left the track with a lead over the others. From there, Bö pulled away, Doll had to let something tear off, but unlike everyone else, he kept close contact. The third shooting, now standing, did not result in a preliminary decision. Bö and Doll had to go around once, but their pursuers didn’t do any better either.

Strong nerves on the last shooting

At the last shooting, Bö missed another target. Doll, on the other hand, hit everything and went into the final lap with a seven-second lead. Anyone who believed that gusts would catch up quickly was wrong. Doll quickly increased the lead and finally crossed the finish line with a reassuring lead.
