FC Bayern’s annual general meeting had already been going on for almost four hours when it got really excited. And honorary president Uli Hoeneß took care of this.
With a good portion of patience and composure, the club bosses listened to all the speeches on the stage in Munich’s Audi Dome, which had already been registered this year before the old and new club president Herbert Hainer was elected.
Down in the auditorium, after a few critical remarks regarding Qatar Airways’ sponsorship at FC Bayern, the club’s best-known face burst for a moment.
Honorary President Uli Hoeneß followed the very harmonious annual general meeting of the sports club with the most members in the world from the first row of spectators – next to him with Karl Hopfner, another former president of FC Bayern.
Hoeneß versus Ott: “This is FC Bayern and not Amnesty International”
Shortly before 10 p.m., Hoeneß got up and briefly left his seat. In doing so, he went directly past Qatar critic Michael Ott, who had previously also made a critical statement against cooperation with the desert state.
The reprimand of the Honorary President for Ott had it all: “Your appearance was embarrassing! This is the Bayern Munich football club and not the General Assembly of Amnesty International! You have to learn that!”
An emotionally charged Hoeneß, who publicly slaps a club member and critic of a sponsorship deal: The annual general meeting of Munich has still got its controversial topic.
The main focus of this year’s AGM was the re-election of President Herbert Hainer, who, after riots at the general meeting last year and his open stance on the Qatar question, was given a lesson with a comparatively low 78 percent approval.
