This means that coach Steffen Baumgart has made a successful start to his new role. “We played on equal terms, Elversberg played similarly well and could have ended 1-1”said Baumgart at the sports show microphone and was basically satisfied. His team thus consolidated third place in the table and can continue to work on promotion to the Bundesliga.

Königsdörffer with a number of chances for HSV

Hamburg started stormily, attacker Königsdörffer had the lead after just five minutes, but was denied from close range by Elversberg’s goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. Immanuël Pherai also missed the goalkeeper in the follow-up shot.

After that, there was a bit of sand in HSV’s gears; apart from a long-range shot from Königsdörffer (35th minute), very little happened, and the game just plodded along.

Then the guests from Elversberg could have taken the lead shortly before the half-time whistle. Paul Wanner (42′) and Semih Sahin (44′) each narrowly missed a goal.

Stubborn Elversbergers

Elversberg remained stubborn at the start of the second half and made life difficult for HSV. But Königsdörffer redeemed his team with a brilliant long-range shot into the corner of the goal to make it 1-0 (53′).

Only six minutes later, the attacker had the second goal after a counterattack, but he missed miserably in front of the opponent’s goal.

Vandermersch with Opportunity for compensation for Elversberg

Hamburg then remained in control, mostly keeping Elversberg away from their own goal. But: In the 88th minute, Hugo Vandermersch had a great header opportunity from close range, HSV goalkeeper Matheo Raab was able to save with a reflex and preserve the lead.

Elversberg threw everything forward, but HSV held its own and wasted its best counterattack opportunities. In the end, the Hanseatic League celebrated a narrow but deserved victory. “It wasn’t that HSV played us apart”said Elversberg’s coach Horst Steffen. “The feeling was always there that we could annoy HSV. There was more to it than the big chance shortly before the end.”
