Barcelona inaugurates seven climatic islands in Port Vell

  • The new areas, designed to combat the heat, include nebulizers that will expel water vapor during days with higher temperatures

The president of Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet, opened this monday seven climatic islands located in the surroundings of Port Vell, and has assured that they will contribute to the objective of the enclave of “doing Barcelona from the port”.

During the opening ceremony, which was also attended by the director of Port Vell, Joan Colldecarrera, and the architect Sergi Carulla, Calvet defended that, “although it seems like a modest action, it is very important”, which has meant a investment of 300,000 euros and that affects about 3,000 square meters.

He explained that the pandemic caused some problems in the supply of materials, which caused a delay in the action schedule, but he highlighted that the final result “faces the climate emergency” and it is based on the goal of decarbonizing the Port of Barcelona as much as possible.

Shape

“This cannot stop here. We must go towards more interventions, always with the aim of making the port more open to the city,” argued Calvet, who has asked the city to proudly claim its port.

Colldecarrera explained that the objective has been “to take advantage of the existing conditions of Port Vell” to increase the welfare of adjacent neighborhoods, attract more visitors and have a dynamic impact.

As Carulla explained, the project began two years ago and has had an impact on a space that he considers was already consolidated, but which could be “shaped” to bring it closer to the dense neighborhoods of the city.

game point

Work has been done in seven areas: two in the Portal de la Pau, two in the Moll de Bosch i Alsina and three in the Paseo Joan de Borbó, where they have been planted bushes and trees to get shadows and have settled nebulizers.

These nebulizers will expel water vapor to temper the area, which is “one of the hottest in the city”, and are also intended to be a playground for children in summer and make the space more pleasant, as well as the wooden loungers installed along the route.

The islands of a pavement with a low thermal index, capable of lowering the ambient temperature by up to four degrees and the performance in general is in line with the pilot program ‘Inclusive climate action’ of the C40 Cities, of which the city of Barcelona is a part.
