Baby boomers in Germany and Poland are getting used to online shopping

It looks like older generations have got used to online shopping too. At least the baby boomers are doing well, according to an annual study of consumer trends from Mondi.

As a result, the so-called “silver surfers” are a growing e-commerce segment and nine out of ten made purchases on the Internet in 2021. 49 percent bought more online than in the previous year and only 5 percent of them bought online for the first time in 2021.

The demand for sustainable packaging is great: More than three quarters of online shoppers: indoors prefer packaging for electronic commerce that is reusable for returns or easily recyclable. Almost half of those surveyed would pay up to three euros more for environmentally friendly packaging. In addition, a positive unpacking experience often leads to repeat purchases.

“Silver Surfers” remain loyal to online trading

Even if safety and health reasons during the pandemic moved 41 percent of this group to shop online in 2021, they will stick with it. 39 percent of them also appreciate the convenience of online shopping, but also the fact that they can buy things that are not available locally (45 percent) and that they get a better overview of brands and offers (52 percent).

“As a provider of sustainable multi-material eCommerce packaging solutions, we are pleased that online shoppers: Inside show a strong preference for packaging that is functional and takes into account the impact on our planet,” commented Daniela Dorner, Director of eCommerce for the Mondi Group.

“We support companies and brands by working with them to produce packaging solutions such as cardboard boxes, mailers or paper bags that are sustainable from the start: made of paper and with a minimum of packaging material that still ensures that the products are safe online -Buyers: arrive inside. What is becoming more and more important for consumers is the question of how they can then reuse or recycle this packaging, ”added Dorner.

For the survey, 3,085 consumers in Germany and Poland were interviewed online in the last quarter of 2021, between Black Friday and New Year.
