Top striker Taiwo Awoniyi from the Bundesliga soccer club Union Berlin helped Nigeria to their next victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles won against Sudan 3-1 (2-0) on Saturday and are already safely in the round of 16 before the last day of the preliminary round. Awoniyi made it 2-0 (45′) with his first goal for the senior national team.

In addition, Samuel Chukwueze (3rd) and Moses Simon (46th) scored. For Sudan, Khedr Safour Daiyeen (70th) shortened the penalty kick. Awoniyi had scored nine goals for Union in the first 17 Bundesliga games of the season. He made his national team debut last October.

Nigeria now lead Group D with 6 points ahead of Guinea-Bissau, Sudan (1 each) and Egypt. Record winners Egypt are still in action against Guinea-Bissau on Saturday evening (8:00 p.m.) and urgently need a win.
