Malaika Mihambo (31) increased her season best to 6.71 m at the athletics meeting in Rehlingen.
The long jump Olympic champion of Tokyo won the competition at the 60th international Pentecost sports festival in front of the Dutchman Pauline Hondema (6.48 m) and 21-year-old Laura Raquel Müller (Unterländer LG/6.41).
“It was already a bit cold and fresh today. At the temperatures, I didn’t get quite as fast. It was very good for that,” said Mihambo satisfied: “The attempt went very well in the gusty wind. It was a big step forward last week.”
Mihambo had recently only reached 6.66 m at the “Golden Oval” in Dresden, five of her six attempts were invalid.
In Rehlingen there was also a shot put Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye, who had become second when she started the outdoor season in Dresden with 19.67 m like Mihambo. This time she won her competition, but only came to 19.06 m. “The conditions and my technology were unfortunately not optimal today,” said Ogunleye.
However, the 26-year-old was not dissatisfied. “The aim was to go home with the victory. I also always want to push over 19 meters and stabilize them. I did both,” she said.
Mihambo and Ogunleye are only at the beginning of their season under the open sky, which finds its peak in the World Cup in Tokyo (13th to 21st September). Then both want to fight for the medals.
