Another infection record, but it remains calm in the intensive care units

Once again, a new corona infection record has been set in our province. In the past seven days, RIVM recorded 63,405 reports from Brabant, compared to 40,592 a week earlier. The influx of new corona patients into hospitals is increasing, as is the total corona occupation. In intensive care, the number of patients continues to fall even after weeks of infection records.

This is evident from figures from the RIVM and the Brabant hospital consultation body ROAZ.

The Brabant hospitals admitted 159 new corona patients last week. That is 39 more than the week before and more than doubling compared to two weeks ago. In total, there are 173 corona patients in hospitals. That is 30 more than a week earlier.

Decline in intensive care
The intensive care unit, which has been used as during the entire corona crisis bottleneck was seen, continues to deflate in the meantime. There are now 27 corona patients on ICs in Brabant. A week ago, there were 35. This gives hospitals more room to carry out operations. The number of hospital admissions is also increasing throughout the Netherlands. Last week 66 Dutch people died because of corona.

Experts expect a further increase in the number of hospital admissions in the coming period. According to virologist Marion Koopmans, that peak is at the end of this month. This is due to the ever-rising infection rates. There is some time between the moment of infection and (serious) corona.

Optimism
However, there is room for optimism, says former head of infectious disease control Jos van de Sande. According to him, the hospital figures are ‘not too bad’, certainly in relation to the infection records. Overall, he says, the situation looks pretty rosy.

“We can be happy that the high numbers of infections cause relatively few admissions to hospitals. We may well get away with it. The fact that things are not getting out of hand in hospitals makes me very positive,” says Van de Sande. .

In the meantime, the increase in the number of registered corona cases continues. For example, 63,405 people from Brabant received a positive test result in the past seven days, compared to 40,592 in the week before. But because the GGDs are at maximum testing capacity and the processing of the high numbers of positive tests is delayed, the actual number of corona infections is even higher. Around 100,000 corona cases have not yet been processed in the Netherlands.

1 in 35 has corona
Nationally, after last week’s 366,120 infections, 530,015 have been added in the past seven days. According to the RIVM, 1 in 35 Dutch people is currently experiencing a corona infection.

Due to easing announced last week, it is obvious that this ratio will continue to rise. About half of all people who went to the GGD test streets turned out to have corona.

vaccinated 3 times
Relatively speaking, fewer people end up in hospitals, because the omikron variant is less pathogenic than previous virus mutations. In addition, many people have now been vaccinated three times. In people over 50 years old, the number of infections remained stable. The largest number of booster shots was administered in this group.

The highest numbers of corona infections come from teenagers. The increase was greatest in the primary and secondary age groups.
