Another Corona case: Second division game between HSV and Erzgebirge Aue canceled

New date open

The German Football League canceled the 2nd Bundesliga game between Hamburger SV and FC Erzgebirge Aue at short notice. As the DFL announced, HSV did not have enough players after another Corona case. The game planned for this Saturday (1.30 p.m.) is therefore cancelled. A new date should be announced as soon as possible.

After a corona outbreak on Thursday, Hamburg had applied to the DFL to cancel the game because, according to the club, “a large part of the squad and staff has been infected with the corona virus”.

Because the DFL had not made a decision for a long time, HSV and Aue had prepared for the game. The Hamburgers completed a training session with 13 field players, two young talents and four goalkeepers. In addition to the well-known Corona case Moritz Heyer, this unit also lacked captain Sebastian Schonlau, Sonny Kittel, Faride Alidou and David Kinsombi. The penultimate table from Aue made his way to Hamburg on Friday afternoon because the club didn’t want to wait any longer for a decision from the DFL. “If the game is not canceled, we assume that the game will be played. We can’t just leave for Hamburg at 5 p.m.,” said the Saxons when asked by the dpa.

According to the DFL rules of play, a team must have at least 16 eligible players for a game to take place. These 16 players must include at least nine licensed players, including a goalkeeper. Suspended players like Hamburg’s Jonas Meffert are counted among the players who are available although they are not allowed to be used.
