Another case of avian influenza in Brandenburg

Another farm in Brandenburg is affected by avian influenza. In the district of Havelland, the pathogen H5N1 was detected in a small animal husbandry by the national reference laboratory, the Friedrich-Löffler Institute.

This was announced by the Ministry of Consumer Protection on Friday. Increased losses had occurred in hobby keeping with around ten chickens. It is already the fifth case of avian influenza in a poultry farm in the state of Brandenburg within a few weeks.

The district veterinary office has taken appropriate measures, including setting up a protection zone with a radius of at least three kilometers and a surveillance zone with a radius of at least ten kilometers around the outbreak population. The affected poultry farmers will be informed about the necessary measures. Among other things, there are restrictions on poultry farming and a stall requirement for domestic poultry in the areas.

According to the FLI, the worst avian influenza epidemic to date is currently taking place in Europe. The epidemic – also known colloquially as bird flu – is highly contagious for poultry.

According to the ministry, there has not yet been a case of illness in humans in Germany. The risk of avian influenza entering poultry farms is still considered very high by the FLI.

The ministry in Potsdam appealed to poultry farmers to strictly comply with all biosecurity measures and to strictly observe the obligation to keep stables.
