A nasty talent show, a dictatorial media mogul, artists who struggle to keep their heads above water. Sing 2 deals with many current topics. Accidentally, because the second animated film by English director Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) want to keep it cozy. Just like in predecessor sing from 2016 it’s all about singing animals who perform many well-known pop songs with passion, from Billie Eilish to U2.
Between all the songs, more than forty in total, the film also manages to tell a coherent story. It’s about the dreams of manager Moon, a worried koala trying to put on a new music theater show. Jennings also tries to build in some quiet moments, but they are less convincing; Sing 2 works best when stress is high and everyone is in total panic.
