Ancelotti starts as an outsider – 200 million separate Real Madrid from Man City

202 million difference in squad value

Carlo Ancelotti seems comfortable in the underdog role that is unfamiliar to Real Madrid. On the way to his eighth Champions League semi-final as a coach, he already threw out two favorite teams, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea – now Manchester City is the opponent with the highest squad value in the world.

At the start of the season, “no one thought that these two teams, Real Madrid and Villarreal, would get this far,” said Ancelotti (quoted via “real total“). 202 million euros separate the “Royal” and the “Citizens”, who both lead their leagues, in terms of squad value. A win over Manchester and a win over Liverpool in the final would have seen Ancelotti defeat the four most valuable teams in football en route to the title.

In the Champions League, the two clubs have met three times in the past ten years and the record is balanced: two wins for Real, two draws and two wins for Man City with a goal difference of 7:7.

Guardiola: “If we have to play against their history, we don’t stand a chance”

“If we have to play against their history, we don’t stand a chance. They have more to show for that,” said Pep Guardiola. In 2020, Manchester threw the Madrilenians, who have already won the “premier class” 13 times, out of the competition in the round of 16. Man City is gradually approaching their first triumph: “In the last ten years we have been in the Champions League, we have survived the group stage, we have been in the round of 16, in the semi-finals, in the final. It’s all a process.”

On Tuesday evening, not only does the most valuable squad in the world meet the record winner of the Champions League, but also the coach with the most semi-final appearances against the second most. Guardiola secures the only best result with his ninth semi-final.
