An exhibition vindicates Joaquim Jordà, the happy gypsy

  • An exhibition organized by UPF and Elisava, completed with a cycle of screenings, recovers the important role of the director of titles such as ‘Mones com la Becky’

This Monday was inaugurated in the ÀreaTallers Gallery of the Poblenou Campus of the Pompeu Fabra University The exhibition ‘Discover Joaquim Jordà’, an initiative of the Center d’Estudis Joaquim Jordà of this university in collaboration with Elisava. The exhibition, which can be seen until next March, covers fundamental aspects in the work of the Homeric Jordà through photographs, posters, original manuscripts of scripts and political texts, copies of the Anagrama collection of notebooks of which he was a part, photographs, phrases from people who knew him or worked with him, two audiovisual pieces and a series of projections that includes eight of his films and other works that dialogue with the work of the director of ‘Mones com la Becky’ (1999), Jordà’s film that emerged from UPF’s Master’s in Creative Documentary, which inaugurated his second and best-known stage as a director.

The black and white photo that illustrates the exhibition poster, dated at the end of the 1970s, is the best portrait of the Jordà provocateur, transgressor, barbarian. In it we see him looking at the camera, humorous, atavistic, relaxed. He has been selected by one of his sons, Sergi Jordà, and according to Núria Villazán, co-director of ‘Mones com la Becky’, she defines the filmmaker as “a happy gypsy & rdquor ;.

Jordi Ballocurator of the exhibition together with Gloria Salvado and Albert Elduque, pointed out that “it is a modest and radiating exhibition that has forced us to work in a different way”. The exhibition is based on one previously held in Santa Coloma de Farners, Jordà’s home town, to which other elements of the exhibition concept developed by international students from Elisava who, in most cases, were completely unaware of the figure of Jordan. To them and them we owe the idea of the panels with multiple serial photos with the faces of various characters and small phrases that define him while defining themselves.

One of the ideas of the exhibition is, according to Balló, that of “claim it as a contemporary classic & rdquor;. The perfect definition for someone who, in addition to being one of the best translators of Lewis Carroll into Spanish, was one of the pillars –as well as one of his greatest critics– of the School of Barcelona, politically aware author –as one of his most important films shows, ‘Númax presents…’ (1980), about the process of self-management in a factory– and, based on titles such as ‘Mones com la Becky’, ‘De nens’ (2003) and ‘Twenty years is nothing’ (2005), one of the pillars of the new documentary.

The parallel cycle of screenings begins this Wednesday with ‘El encargado delhunter’ (1990), the film that Jordà made about his friend Jacinto Esteva, with the intervention of Mikel Gurrea, director of the recent ‘Suro’. Judit Carrera (director of the CCCB), the filmmakers Luis López Carrasco, Isa Campo and Andrés Duque, the writer Eloy Fernández Porta, the journalist Jordi Amat and the philosopher Marina Garcés will participate in later sessions.
