Amy Pieters can’t talk yet, mental recovery is slow

The family of cyclist Amy Pieters has given a new update about her recovery. Physically, her healing is going ‘very well’ after her fall at the end of 2021 and the serious brain injury she sustained. Mentally, things are going a lot less energetically, according to the update on her website. Talking is not yet possible and it is still uncertain whether that will ever be possible.

The memory of 32-year-old Pieters from Zwanenburg is not yet good. “Her memory is short, very short. From Amy’s point of view, that may be her luck, not consciously realizing and knowing what happened to her,” the update on her site says. “Amy doesn’t seem to realize what she’s missing and can’t do anymore. Amy is cheerful every day because of her character, her smile makes up for a lot. However, our sadness, to miss the old Amy, remains.”

Pieters crashed hard at the end of 2021 during road training near Calpe, Spain. She lost consciousness and suffered severe brain damage. The cyclist had to undergo surgery and was in a coma for months. She is currently recovering in the Daan Theeuwes Center in Woerden, but cannot stay there much longer. “Due to her severe cognitive limitations and her language disorder, rehabilitation is no longer appropriate here.”

A new place is being sought. “Amy needs care and help 24 hours a day. Through rest, routine and safety, we hope that Amy can build more independence and we also hope that Amy will eventually be able to talk again.”
