With 37 percent, people between the ages of 18 and 35 are the least often the guideline. People over 75 do this most often, namely 60 percent. More than half of the women do not drink or a maximum of one glass a day, for men this is 35 percent.
The monitor also shows that the Amsterdam region has the most smokers, almost a fifth of the adults. This is followed by Groningen and Rotterdam-Rijnmond.
Furthermore, last year in the Amsterdam region, 57 percent of the inhabitants met the Movement Directive. This guideline comprises every week at least 2.5 hours of moderately intensive exercise and at least twice a week exercises for muscles and bones. On average in the Netherlands, the share of adults that sport has increased every week between 2020 and 2024.
Director Ton Coenen of GGD GHOR (the umbrella branch organization of GGDs) finds it encouraging to see that more people do not drink or do not drink much. “But too large a group is still irresponsible with alcohol. It remains important to invest in targeted prevention, especially for those groups that are left behind.”
