If the wage standard law is not changed, the ACV union will join the strike actions that ABVV has already announced. That is what chairman Marc Leemans says. There is also a high chance of a strike call at ACLVB.
The three unions have once again explained in parliament what they think is the problem with the law. It means that wages cannot rise more than a predetermined upper limit. The unions want freedom again to talk about stronger wage increases – certainly in sectors where things are going well – and believe that the method of calculation is wrong.
The socialist union has already announced a general strike in the week of 7 November. The ACV and the ACLVB first want to wait and see what their argument in parliament will yield.
Signal
Leemans expects a signal by early September. “Then it must be clear whether something is moving or not. If not, the conclusion will be the same with us as with the ABVV,” he says. Because there has already been a large demonstration, the unions then resort to the strike weapon.
Mario Coppens of the liberal trade union ACLVB is on the same page. “The issue lives in the companies. This is not something from the union top.” He too is waiting for a signal. If this does not happen, there is a good chance that there will also be a call to strike. “But I don’t decide that alone,” says Coppens.
