Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI. (2005-2013), was Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977 to 1982. He was succeeded by Cardinal Friedrich Wetter for 25 years, until Reinhard Marx took over in 2008. The Vicar General at the time, Gerhard Gruber, is still alive from Ratzinger’s Munich tenure.

The focus is also on Peter Beer, vicar general from 2010 to 2020, today professor at the Gregorian University in Rome and employee of the papal child protection expert Hans Zollner; and the longtime Munich church judge Lorenz Wolf, who is responsible for a number of judgments in church abuse processes.
