A surprising twist – Madeleine’s husband Chris O’Neill is now a German citizen

Princess Madeleine’s husband Chris O’Neill is now German.

Princess Madeleine and his spouse Chris O’Neill and the family’s children will move from the United States to Stockholm next year.

Originally, it was thought that Chris should have applied for a residence permit in Sweden, but this is not the case.

Born in Britain, Chris has both British and American citizenships, which would have made him a third-country national in Sweden and therefore required him to apply for a residence permit.

Expressen knows how to tellthat Chris has applied for and received the citizenship of the EU country Germany, that is, he does not need to apply for a residence permit, as one is not required of EU citizens.

Chris was born in 1974 and received British citizenship immediately after birth. He obtained American citizenship through his father, and in 1976 he obtained West German citizenship through his mother.

Chris’s German citizenship was not renewed in the 80s due to the country’s legislation, which did not allow multiple citizenships.

Now this legislation has been changed and Germany allows multiple citizenships.

Chris himself has never lived in Germany.

Chris has lived with Madeleine in Sweden, but at that time Britain was still an EU country.

Court spokesman Margareta Thorgren tells Expressen that Chris applied for a new passport at the German embassy in Stockholm, and he also got it.

With German citizenship, Chris does not need to apply for a residence permit.

The princess family was originally supposed to move back to Sweden next month, but the move was postponed to 2024. The exact reason for the move has not been announced.
