Health and technology company Abbott is working on “biowearable” devices to track certain elements of the body, with the idea that they provide users more information about their general health and help them take action. The Lingo devices will measure glucose, ketones, and lactate, and possibly They will be able to monitor alcohol levels.

Abbott is a company that does not sound like much to us in Europe, but in the US it has become famous for its rapid antigen tests for COVID-19. The next biological devices are based on the sensing technology that Abbott developed for Freestyle Livre, wearables intended for the sports world. Athletes are using a version of the device to help optimize their food intake for their training and competitions.

The goal of the Ketone Biological Device is to provide continuous ketone monitoring so that users can see how long does it take to enter ketosis. That’s a state where a body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to convert to energy and instead burns fat (and generates ketones). With the portable lactate device, Abbott’s goal is to continuously measure lactate buildup while you exercise. It says it can provide information on athletic performance.

It will be some time before Abbott can bring this technology to the consumer market. When the biowearables arrive and work as promised, they should help those interested in keeping a close eye on their body’s condition to do so.
