The question is how the electricity cables are broken, but that may be due to a collision with a cargo ship. There is a voltage of 110,000 volts on the cables, because of the danger, shipping cannot pass it. From Amsterdam to Duurstede, on the border of Utrecht and Gelderland, shipping is blocked. It is a distance of more than 50 kilometers.
It is not yet clear how long the blockage will take. Research is being done by, among others, the network operator and Rijkswaterstaat.
