In 2013, IT engineer James Howells accidentally disposed of a hard drive with 8,000 Bitcoin. Today, the value of this digital currency amounts to around $ 750 million. Despite years of efforts to recover the hard drive on a landfill, his lawsuit against the city of Newport was rejected.

An expensive mistake: how it came to the loss
James Howells started mining Bitcoins in 2009, at a time when cryptocurrency was still largely unknown and had a low market value. He stored 8,000 Bitcoin on a hard drive, which he had almost forgotten in the years. In 2013, he made a serious mistake, Howells incorporated the hard drive error together with other electronic waste. According to BTC-Echo, the hard drive landed at the Newport city landfill, where it is to be today.

At the time of the loss, Bitcoin was not nearly as much worth as today. It was only in the years that the course of the cryptocurrency increased rapidly that Howells became aware of the full extent of his error. The 8,000 Bitcoin, which were only worth a few thousand dollars at the time, represent a wealth in the millions of millions.
In vain recovery attempts
Since the loss of the hard drive, James Howells has repeatedly tried to convince the city of Newport of a search in the landfill. As Puls24 reports, Howells proposed to completely cover the costs for the salvage. He also planned to support the find through the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence and robots.
Howells promised to donate parts of the found Bitcoin assets for charitable purposes, including projects to promote the Digitization in Newport. Despite these offers, the city of Newport stayed with its attitude. The authorities argued that the search was not only associated with enormous costs, but also considerable environmental and security risks. As The Sun reported, a salvage would have decommissioned the landfill for months and had no guarantee for success. The disposal on an urban landfill makes the search particularly complicated. Over the years, tons of waste on the landfill have been layered, and the exact position of the hard drive could never be determined.
The court ruling: a final defeat
The case of James Howells recently took a final end. The High Court in Cardiff under Richter Keyser decided not to allow the procedure. According to the court, there was no prospects for success. A recovery of the hard drive in the landfill was classified as too risky, according to the official court decision. The justification of the court is based on the British law to control the pollution from 1974, which provides for strict regulations for dealing with garbage and potential dangers for public health.

Judge Keyser made it clear that excavation could release harmful substances and endanger the health of the residents. The judgment stated that “there are potentially serious risks that raise public health and the environment”.
