At the Pittsburgh Steelers, both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields did plenty of advertising on their own in the past NFL season. But the days in Pennsylvania are counted for one of the two quarterbacks.
This provided Steelers-Owner Art Rooney II on Monday clear when he was asked about the possibility, Wilson and Fields to be signed together again.
“I wouldn’t close the door, but I would say it is rather unlikely,” revealed the franchise older. “I think both see themselves as a starter and I don’t know if they want to share the same job again next year. So I would say that we will most likely not bring them back.”
Wilson and Fields hired the Steelers for a year last spring. Since the former failed due to injury at the beginning of the season, Fields took over and led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start. He reaches ten touchdowns (with just one interception).
From week 7, the Steelers nevertheless rely on the recovered Wilson and were therefore better positioned, especially in the Passing Game. The changeover also showed the desired result straight away. Wilson initially won six of his seven games as a starter. After that, however, the team collapsed and all lost the last five games of the season.
NFL: Steelers owner wants QB clarity
Despite this break -in, Rooney holds large pieces on the two quarterbacks and hopes to be able to hold at least one of the two signal callers. “You are both capable quarterbacks and I would like to commit one of them. So that will be a priority and I think that gives us the best chance to get to us,” said the Steelers president.
The 72-year-old also explained that he wants to calm the situation around the quarterback situation and that he will offer one of the two candidates a multi-year contract for this reason.
Meanwhile, Rooney is not worried about the player who ultimately does not make it back to Pittsburgh, because: “I found that both Russ and Justin were promising in certain phases of the season and I think they are both able to To be a starter in this league. “
