Nono art is an islandparaphrasing a famous line by John Donne. Never like today, in fact, different disciplines but complementary they find themselves communicating and uniting, giving rise to unprecedented experiments and creations. The last, successful, example is the movie The Opera! – Arias for an eclipse.
The film, premiered in the Special Screening section of the 19th edition of the Rome Film Festival, aims to accomplish an unprecedented feat. Melt opera And pop music, visual design and artificial intelligence, Greek myth and Italian art. A fusion of iconic characters, famous arias and unforgettable songs crowned by an element that is anything but secondary: the magnetic stage costumes, designed by Dolce&Gabbana.
Greek myth and an exceptional cast
Directed by Davide Livermore and Paolo Gep Cucco, the film The Opera! – Arias for an eclipse boasts a cast international. The two protagonists, the tenor Valentino Buzza and the soprano Mariam Battistelliare in fact accompanied by Vincent Cassel, Fanny Ardant, Caterina Murino, Rossy de Palma And Erwin Schrott. The two directors therefore imagined a contemporary revisitation of the eternal myth of Orpheus and Eurydiceimmersed in a dreamlike and dreamy aesthetic universe, at times mysterious and disturbing, at others delicate and romantic. Within the film they then alternate arias of very famous works, from Madame Butterfly at the Toscainterspersed with pop songs, such as the anthem The Power of Love.

Movies The Opera!: the vision of Dolce&Gabbana
The film, produced by Showlab with Rai Cinema, relies on another important collaboration. The one with the Italian fashion house Dolce&Gabbana. The designer duo, in fact, designed all the costumes for the film. The spectacular (wedding) dress sported by Mariam Battistelli for most of The Opera!. The creation, perfect for a red carpet or for the Scala stage, is characterized by a lingerie-effect satin bodice, accompanied by a wide and voluminous tulle skirt. The end result is contemporary, yet timeless.

In The Opera! – Arias for an eclipsethe Dolce&Gabbana fashion house has remained faithful to its followers aesthetic codesmodeling them according to the different characters. The timeless charm of Fanny Ardantmodern Proserpina, for example, is expressed through tailored suits entirely made of white lace, as well as in rigorous and sophisticated suits with profiled fake fur. Caterina Murinofor its part, perfidious “concierge” of the underworld, sports a revisited uniform, however made more enveloping, sensual and hypnotic. Always in shades of black.

An unprecedented musical
The latest work by Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce therefore renews the indissoluble and always profitable relationship between fashion and cinema. Furthermore, in this case, the designer duo was called upon to imagine and give shape to the clothes of characters immersed in a unique universe, just like the film that tells about it. Between a semi-submerged Paris, a cliff overlooking the River Hades and a disturbing hotel lobby, the film proceeds through a constant play of musical references: from Puccini to Handel, from Verdi to Bellini, from Vivaldi to Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
The movie The Opera! – Arias for an eclipse arrives in Italian cinemas on 20, 21 and 22 January 2025.
