From Little Drummer Boy to Crooked Boy to Country Boy.
Just six months after his rock EP “Crooked Boy” feat. Stroke Nick Valensi, Starr is now releasing a country work with his 21st studio album. However, to assume that the stylistic direction of Beyoncé and Lana del Rey is trend hopping would be absurd in several ways. After all, who would an 84-year-old who played in the biggest and best band of all time have to adapt to? He also had success in 1965 with a cover of Buck Owens’ country number “Act Naturally” on the B-side of “Yesterday”, and he wrote the genre showpiece “Don’t Pass Me By” for the “White Album”.
In 1970 he dedicated an entire record to the sound of the South with BEACOUPS OF BLUES. The eleven original songs on LOOK UP were mostly written by country icon T Bone Burnett and produced in, of course, Nashville and, why not, LA. Starr’s calm voice nestles perfectly against the pedal steel guitars and strings. You can really see him sitting on a rocking chair on the porch, calming down, but already spotting the next change of course in the sky. Look up!
