There was speculation for a long time, but now it’s a done deal: Sebastian Kehl has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Sebastian Kehl remains sports director at Borussia Dortmund. According to BVB information, the 44-year-old signed a new contract on Thursday until the summer of 2027. His previous contract expires this summer.
“In the past few weeks we have had intensive discussions about content, structures and economic issues and have now brought them to a positive conclusion,” said Managing Director Lars Ricken.
Because of BVB’s difficult season so far, an extension was not taken for granted in recent weeks. At the annual general meeting at the end of November, Ricken emphasized that he wanted to continue working with Kehl. However, no agreement was reached last year.
As sixth in the table after 15 games, the first half of the season has been anything but satisfactory for Dortmund. On Friday, BVB will play against double winners Bayer Leverkusen for the Bundesliga restart.
Kehl was denied a promotion to sports director. Ricken got the job unexpectedly. This season there was also criticism of Dortmund’s squad composition.
Kehl has been sports director at BVB since 2022, where he played for 13 years. “We have agreed on clear competencies and responsibilities and have great ambitions together,” said the former Dortmund captain. Ricken once again clearly outlined the yardstick for the coming contract years: “To be continuously represented in the Champions League.”
