Kevin Keegan was the Bundesliga’s first world star – and made HSV champions. Now the English football legend has received a shocking diagnosis.
There is still a lot of respect for the “Mighty Mouse” in Hamburg today, even though Kevin Keegan is no longer a fan of him HSV is active. The Brit played for Hamburg from 1977 to 1980. He was the Bundesliga’s first global star, put HSV on course for the most successful years in the club’s history – and even stormed the charts as a pop star.
At the beginning of the 1970s, HSV was not one of the absolute top clubs in Germany. Sometimes the club came 14th and narrowly avoided relegation, sometimes it came fourth and at least played in the European Cup. After Uwe Seeler’s heyday, the splendor of the old days was missing.
Most expensive transfer in the Bundesliga
Kevin Keegan is completely different: As a playmaker for Liverpool FC, the attacker, born in 1951, was involved in almost 200 goals in six years. He won the English championship three times, the UEFA Cup twice, the FA Cup and the European Cup once each. Keegan got the nickname “Mighty Mouse” because he was so small, fast and technically strong.

Someone like that in the German Bundesliga? Unimaginable. HSV manager Peter Krohn still managed to lure Kevin Keegan from Liverpool to the Elbe for 2.3 million German marks. At the time, it was the most expensive transfer that had ever occurred in Germany.
The first year doesn’t go well. Kevin Keegan only scored twelve goals and had difficulty arriving in Hamburg. HSV only finished tenth in the league. When Günter Netzer became Hamburg manager in 1978, Keegan is said to have asked him for a change on his first day. Netzer stood his ground and persuaded Keegan to stay at HSV.
Kevin Keegan makes HSV champions
With success: the Brit scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga alone and helped HSV win the German championship. For his achievements he received the “Ballon d’Or” in 1978 and 1979 – making him officially the best footballer in the world.
HSV sponsor BP made Kevin Keegan “Super Kevin” in advertising. In the comic-like advertisements, the kicking superhero fought against energy waste as early as the late 1970s.
