Sanne Wallis de Vries who thinks right-wing things about a certain subject? Then you have to make it very colorful. And that is apparently exactly what the NPO does. “From my tax dollars!”

It is no secret that the current conservative government has relatively little interest in public broadcasting and comedian Sanne Wallis de Vries finds this extremely unfortunate. After all, she is very fond of the NPO and can be seen there regularly, while she almost never appears on commercial TV channels such as RTL 4 or SBS 6.

Left-wing rascals

You should really cherish the NPO, she thinks. “I would find it incredibly stupid if the NPO disappeared,” she says in the VARA guide. “It is essential to have independent state television with an educational function, without commercial interests.”

It bothers her that Geert Wilders and his colleagues do not attach any value to it. “I think it’s sad where things are going with a government that simply says it doesn’t consider public broadcasting super important. In fact, it is said that the NPO is biased and anti-right. That only left-wing rascals work there. So scary.”

Right-wing things

Wilders and his comrades have far too narrow a view, Sanne thinks. “A cabinet should have a vision: what do we want with care, society, education? Not just looking at how foreigners can be kept out. The NPO must also take a critical look at itself.”

“I certainly see a game or program — I won’t say which one, I think that seems silly — about which I think right-wing things like: about my tax dollars? Maybe others think this about programs I like. Such as Tegenlicht, which unfortunately goes off the air. Secondary schools use this as teaching material. It’s a shame that it disappears.”

Favorite TV

Finally: what is Sanne’s favorite TV? “I follow current affairs and the news. And I like documentaries. I’m not objective now, but I loved Thomas Erdbrink’s Our Man in the Taliban, on which my husband worked as a cameraman. It opened up Afghanistan just as Erdbrink previously provided insight into Iran.”

“I often don’t have enough time for series. I’m currently watching The Diplomat, a wonderful combination of politics and humor. Furthermore, I am hopelessly behind: I still haven’t seen Mad Men and Breaking Bad.”
