Record winner THW Kiel is in the semi-finals of the German Handball Cup for the 22nd time in the club’s history.
The North Germans won 36:33 (20:20) against VfL Gummersbach. Rhein-Neckar Löwen and MT Melsungen also booked tickets for the Final Four on April 12th and 13th next year in Cologne.
The Lions defeated ThSV Eisenach 31:28 (15:15), Melsungen beat SG Flensburg-Handewitt 30:28 (14:13). On Wednesday, HBW Balingen-Weilstetten qualified for the final round in the cathedral city with a 38:33 win after extra time over second division rivals HSC 2000 Coburg.
Lions end negative series against Eisenach
After a false start to the game, Kiel took command after the break. With his goal to make it 30:27 (50th minute), Elias Ellefsen á Skipagötu put the North Germans on the road to victory. In Heidelberg, the Lions, who had previously lost three times in a row against Eisenach in the Bundesliga, celebrated reaching the semi-finals.
Two days after the MT announced the commitment of SG captain Johannes Golla for the 2026/27 season, the North Hessians inflicted their next defeat on Flensburg after 24:33 in the Bundesliga.
Before the game, it was announced that Melsungen goalkeeper Nebojsa Simic had extended his contract early until June 30, 2029.
