Marta Bassino surprisingly won the Crans Montana downhill. For Kira Weidle, the top places were once again a long way off.
Premiere victory in Crans Montana: Marta Bassino won a downhill for the first time in her career. So far, the Italian has only been on a downhill podium once. She had already attracted attention the day before when she finished fifth on a soft track with the high start number 21.
The giant slalom and Super-G specialist is considered a sophisticated technician in the World Cup. She showed all her skills on the technically demanding descent and finished 0.54 seconds ahead of her compatriot Federica Brignone, who is also a giant slalom specialist. After four wins in a row, the previous day’s winner Lara Gut-Behrami (+1.11 seconds) had to settle for third place. However, the Swiss was able to further extend her lead in the overall World Cup over the paused Mikaela Shiffrin (USA).
Weilde follows behind again – “It will happen again at some point”
After finishing 22nd the day before, Kira Weidle was looking for redemption. But once again the Starnberg native fell short of her expectations. Her journey seemed unsteady, she drove hesitantly and again crossed the finish line a long way behind: she was 2.26 seconds behind Bassino – 18th place.
At the finish line, her dissatisfaction was evident – the liberation she had hoped for did not materialize. “It was similar to yesterday. I didn’t really get into the driving and couldn’t generate any pace. It’s a disappointing result“Weidle admitted. “I try something new every day – standing still doesn’t help. At some point it will happen again“, said the 27-year-old in an interview with ZDF. Maybe it’s a small consolation for Weidle that she was ahead of the reigning world champion. Jasmin Flury from Switzerland crossed the finish line one place behind Weidle after a driving error.
So far it has been a largely disappointing winter for the Starnberg resident. She only made it into the top ten four times. Teammate Emma Aicher retired early after a driving error. This means that there were once again no World Cup points for the DSV young hope as well as for Katrin Hirtl-Stanggassinger (36th/+3.41).
