Qatar wins AFC Asian Cup: defending its title against Jordan

Hosts Qatar successfully defended their title at the AFC Asian Cup. The emirate’s selection won the final on Saturday against outsiders Jordan 3-1 (1-0) and thus triumphed at the continental championship like four years ago.

The outstanding attacker Akram Afif (22nd minute, 73rd and 90th +5) from Al-Sadd SC scored all three goals for the 2022 World Cup host country from penalties at the Lusail Stadium. Jordan, who surprisingly defeated South Korea under German coach Jürgen Klinsmann in the semi-finals, held up well overall, but only managed to equalize through Yazan Al-Naimat (67′).

Afif ultimately became the undisputed top scorer with eight tournament goals. In the final he overtook the six-time successful Iraqi Aymen Hussein. Qatar emerged victorious in all of their own games; the quarter and semi-finals against Uzbekistan (4:3 nE) and Iran (3:2) were very close.
